Graduation CapDear Senior Class of 2020,

I hope that this letter finds you and your family doing well and staying safe. I wanted to provide you and your parents with information on several end of the year events that we have planned. We have been working hard to provide you with a memorable experience that honors your accomplishments while following CDC guidelines and safety precautions.

The information in this letter is designed to be a guide to keep nearby and reference frequently as we approach these important events. For some of these, further rapid communications will also be sent with explicit details and processes to be followed. As always, feel free to call us if there is something in the letter or further communications that is unclear to you.

Cap & Gown Pick Up and Return of Items
Cap & Gown pick up took place on May 28. In addition senior Chromebooks, textbooks and FCPS items were also collected on May 28.

Graduation Parade - June 4 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
The faculty and staff at JWHS also wish to celebrate you one last time! On Thursday, June 4 (graduation day), we will be hosting a "Graduation Parade" on campus. Seniors can enter the parade route on Woodside Place (near the tennis courts, off of Apple Pie Ridge Rd.) any time between 2:00 - 2:45 p.m. The staff from JWHS and the JWHS feeder schools will be stationed along the parade route to cheer you on one last time. Though parents may ride in the vehicle with their graduate, this is not a public event and is for seniors and staff only. We are requesting one vehicle per family and that nobody exit their vehicle during the event.

Virtual Graduation - June 4 at 7:00 p.m.
The JWHS Virtual Graduation was recorded on May 13 and will be shown on the James Wood High School Facebook page and on FCPS Youtube channel at 7:00 p.m. on June 4 and then archived. Graduation will be as close to a traditional graduation as possible. All components including calling every senior name, speeches, and other traditions have been included. Seniors will be official graduates at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Senior Awards Night - June 10 at 7:00 p.m.
JWHS Virtual Senior Awards Night was recorded on May 12 and will be shown on the James Wood High School Facebook Page on June 10 at 7:00 p.m. and then archived. Senior Awards Night is when scholarships and Outstanding Student departmental awards are presented. Invitations will be sent to all students that are receiving an award. Awards will be available for pick up with diplomas at the Senior Graduation Walk on June 11 and 12.

Senior Graduation Walk - June 11 & 12 (June 13 & 14 - Rain Dates)
JWHS is providing an opportunity for graduates to have a Senior Graduation Walk on June 11 & 12. Graduates and up to four members of their families will be able to come to Walter Barr Field at Jerry Kelican Stadium at pre-reserved times to walk the steps, touch the JW Rock, have photos taken on the football field, and parents to turn the graduate's tassel. We will allow a select number of graduates and families each hour. A Google form sign up was sent to families to reserve their time on May 20. Victor O'Neill will be on site for graduation photos. A senior class graduation photo will be completed from senior photos this day. This will be a very controlled event. Please refer to the Senior Graduation Walk handout for further details. Diplomas and senior awards will be available for pick up at the senior walk.

Yearbooks
Yearbooks are due to arrive in mid to late June. There will be an organized pickup for these soon afterwards. There are a few yearbooks still available. To purchase a yearbook go to yearbookforever.com.

James Wood Athletic Association Banquet - June 14 at 2:00 p.m.
The JWAA will be holding its 2020 Scholarship and Award Celebration on Sunday, June 14 at 2:00 p.m. Due to distancing restrictions, we will have a drive-in style ceremony in the JWHS parking lot so that each recipient and their family can attend. Scholarship and/ or award winners will receive their invitation in the mail next week. This will be an invite only event. The rain date will be June 21.

Senior Survey
Seniors have been sent an email from the School Counseling Department that contains a senior survey. Please have your senior complete this ASAP.

Senior Party
The Senior Party Committee is hoping to be able to have a modified senior party at a later day this summer. More information will be sent out when this event is scheduled.

We are excited to celebrate the class of 2020 and have worked to provide a series of memorable experiences that we hope will honor our graduates appropriately given our current circumstances. Though no series of events can truly replace the embraces, laughs, and tears, we humbly request your presence at these events and look forward to celebrating your years of hard work and many accomplishments.
