US Air Force
will have a representative in Guidance Thursday February 8th at 11:40.  Please stop by the Guidance office for a pass, if you are interested in speaking with their representative.

James Wood FBLA
is celebrating FBLA Week.  FBLA-PBL (Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda, Inc.) is the largest career student business organization in the world.  Each year, FBLA-PBL helps over 230,000 members prepare for careers in business. All paid FBLA members are invited to the business department today (Thursday) during their study hall for cake.

Attention Key Club!!  2018-2019 Officer Applications are due Friday, February 9.

On February 12th & 13th, the Voter Registrar will be visiting Government classrooms (this is rescheduled from January). Students will have the opportunity to register to vote online during the visit. If you want to register to vote at this time, please be sure that you have your full Social Security Number and your Virginia Driver's License number. The school does not have access to this information so you will need to bring it with you.

The softball interest meeting originally scheduled for Wednesday will now be held on Friday, February 9 at 3:00 PM in the library.  If you cannot attend, please see Mr. Woshner after Friday for any information distributed during the meeting. You can also email Coach Baker at utbaker@comcast.net .

The girls’ tennis interest meeting originally scheduled for Wednesday will now be held on Monday, February 12  at 2:45 PM in room 205.  If you absolutely cannot attend this meeting, please see Miss Sweet for information or email her at sweets@fcpsk12.net . 

There will be a Boys soccer meeting right after school on Friday 2:45pm in the gymnasium.  Tryout schedule and times will be discussed.

There will be a boys tennis interest meeting Friday at 3:00 in the library.  It shouldn't take any longer than 30 minutes. If you cannot attend, please see Mr. Levi or Mr. Woshner.

There will be an Outdoor Track & Field Meeting for all interested athletes and their parents on Tuesday, February 13th, at 6 pm in the auditorium.

The next Leo Club meeting will be Wednesday, February 14th, right after school in Mrs. Leonard’s room 230. Stop by Mrs. Leonard’s Room today or tomorrow to sign up for events.

Be on the look out for Stall Talk: the monthly SCA Newsletter detailing important school-wide and club events. Stall Talk has been shared with all students in the "JWHS Students" Team Drive and will be displayed in both bathrooms by the end of the week.

FCCLA has two opportunities to help our community. You can purchase a coupon book to the Alamo and Green Turtle for $10. The total value of the coupons is $60! Proceeds benefit area veterans. See a teacher in rooms 104, 107, 110 to purchase one. AND...we are collecting NEW shoes for children in foster care. These children are in the midst of tremendous crisis and chaos and deserve new shoes. Any size shoe for preschool age children all the way up to teens will be accepted, but they must be NEW. You can deliver these to rooms 104, 107, 110 or the main office.

Academically gifted sophomores and juniors who are interested in applying for GIS for next year can pick up an  application in guidance beginning Monday, February 12th. Completed applications are due to the guidance secretary by Wednesday, February 21st.

Calling all future educators! Now is the time to apply to the “Teachers For Tomorrow” program for next school year. Stop in the Guidance Department to pick up an application or see Mrs. Riggleman in Room 110. Applications are due February 23rd. Did you know that all completers of this course that have earned a teaching license and applied to work in Frederick County Public Schools have been hired! You will be career and college ready.

The wrestling team placed 3rd in the Northwestern District Championship this past Saturday at Liberty.  Aaron Curd won the 152 pound weight class, Josiah Gleasen and Luke Roy placed second, and Corey Lemons, Joey Vitola, and Brayden Patterson-Campbell each placed third.  Six other Colonels placed fourth and all of these wrestlers now advance to the Region 4A-C Championships on Friday at Sherando.

The boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed last Friday in the Northwestern District Championship at Hagerstown Community College. Both teams finished 5th overall. Rene Rosso led the girls with first place finishes in the long jump, triple jump, and 55 meter hurdles, 2nd place finishes in the high jump and 55 meter dash, and a third place finish in the 300 meter dash. Brooke Sandy was 5th with a state-qualifying jump in the high jump. Notable performances on the boys’ team were Logan Owens with a 4th place in the triple jump and a 5th place in the 55 meter hurdles, Drake Tews with a 2nd place in the high jump, and Dominic Revetta with a 3rd place in the shot put. These athletes along with other 4th, 5th, and 6th place finishers will compete at the Region 4C Championship this Friday at Hagerstown.

Freshman Kim Warnagiris broke two James Wood school swimming records in this past Friday's Northwestern District Championships.  Kim won the 100 yard butterfly in a time of :59.44.  She placed 2nd in the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 2:00.11.  Junior Brian Hua improved his school record time in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of :55.97 which was good for 3rd in the event.  Kim and Brian, along with six other Wood swimmers, will compete in the Region 4A-C Championships this Friday.

Congratulations to Elijah Filbert and Mark Cisler for signing to play collegiate football yesterday.  Elijah signed with Division I Wagner College in Staten Island, New York to play football for the Seahawks and Mark signed with Division II Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, West Virginia. 

Senior Daniel Woodrum was selected as the February FCPS Student Athlete of the Month.  Daniel participates in cross country, swimming, and track. The program will also be on Comcast Channel 18 throughout the month at the following times: 1, 3, 9, and 11 A.M., and 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 PM. Congratulations to Daniel for all of his achievements!
